Old Paintings and Engravings

On this page we have created an archive of old paintings and engravings of the dale, that we have found or have been sent. If you have any that would be of interest to others, we would be delighted to include them. Just let us know, or send us a good quality scan, either through our discussion page or by e-mail

Ullswater, early morning
(c1824)

Painted by John Glover (1767-1849)

The detail of this oil painting is amazing. John Glover owned Blowick Farm by the lake. The dale made such an impression upon John Glover, that, when he emigrated to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) in 1830, he named the property he bought near Launceston 'Patterdale'.

The viewpoint is just above Blowick looking south-west and Patterdale Hall can be seen quite clearly.

Ullswater and Patterdale
(1825)

Painted by John Parker (1798-1860), he was a Welsh cleric and amateur artist.

Almost the same viewpoint as John Glover's painting above. Patterdale Hall is prominent but what is the large building closer to the lake?

Brotherswater from
Kirkstone Foot
(c1832)

Drawn by Thomas Allom (1804-1872).

Location appears to be where the Brotherswater Inn is nowadays, perhaps that is the Inn on the left.

Drawn by Thomas  Allom (1804-1872).

Upper Reach of Ullswater

The viewpoint is Gowbarrow Park.

Grisdale, near Ulleswater, Westmorland

Drawn by Thomas  Allom (1804-1872).

Stybarrow Crag, Westmorland
(c1832)

Drawn by Thomas  Allom (1804-1872).

Rather than his usual landscape drawing, this depicts the dalesmen fighting Scottish raiders at Stybarrow Crag and was produced as a postcard, no doubt for tourists interested in the King of Patterdale story.

Gelderd's Family Hotel, Patterdale
(c1850)

In 1787 it was an ale-house called 'Nell House' but sometime before 1819 it had been renamed the 'King's Arms Inn'.  John Gelderd took over the tenancy around January 1837, following the death of William Wilson (the owner was Daniel Mounsey).  A new accommodation wing was added in 1845 and the hotel renamed 'Gelderd's Family Hotel'. It soon gained a reputation as one of the finest hotels in the Lake District, boasting a guest list that included; Queen Dowager Adelaide and her sister Ada Duchess of Saxe Weimar in 1840, King of Saxony and Prince William of Prussia in 1844 and, in 1857, His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. In 1861 John Gelderd left to run a hotel in Brampton and the name was changed back to the 'King's Arms Hotel'. The name changed yet again before 1871 to it's present one of 'Patterdale Hotel'.

William Home Lizars (1788-1859) is named on the picture. He was an Edinburgh based artist, engraver and publisher. However, most of his work was of birds and animals, so he may have just been the engraver.
